Four Helpful Pet Photography Tips for Owners

Let’s face it – all pet owners think they are professional photographers when it comes to taking pictures of their darling fur babies. Just like with your human friends and family, it is hard not to want to capture their adorableness and put it on display for all to see.

However, pictures don’t always come easy. How many times have you found yourself crouched on the ground, camera in hand and ready to go, begging your pet to recreate the adorable thing he or she was just doing? We’ve all been there and can attest to how frustrating (and maybe even a little embarrassing) it can be to try every trick in the book, with no success.

This is where we come in! We have a whole slew of tips that are guaranteed to do the trick and help you get the perfect shot for all to see. Whether you want to capture your pup’s tail wagging or your kitty’s all-around charm, these handy pet photography tips should help you get the job done.

Tip #1: Treats, Treats, Treats!

A list of photo tips wouldn’t be complete without the tried and trusted treat trick. There is nothing as effective as good old-fashioned bribery to get your pet to do what you want.

Before you dive right in, it may be helpful to sweeten your pet up by giving them a few small treats before you get started. Once they realize you have treats, they’ll be far more likely to do as you please! Then, when you start to photograph, all you’ll have to do is hold the treats in your hand near your camera in order to get their attention.

Tip #2: Consider the Background

Simple backgrounds are always a good idea when photographing your pet, in large part because they allow your fur baby to be the focus. Furthermore, a background with a colorful rug, blanket and a few toys is an excellent way to brighten up the space and make your pet stand out even more.

Tip #3: Make Your Pup Smile

Smiling dog pics are the best, no matter which way you look at it. A great trick to get your dog to smile for the camera is to take him for a quick jaunt around the backyard or living room. As soon as you’re done, bring him or her back to the spot you want to photograph. They should be panting – and smiling – at this point, which will create the perfect ‘awww’ moment and picture!

Tip #4: Surprise Them

While a staged photo makes for a great one, there is something to be said for sneaking up on your pet and catching them off guard. A good way to do this is, once you have your camera set up and ready to do, have someone call out to them or whistle. This will surprise your pet and give you a few quick moments to capture them in a stunning, alert posture.
