How to Comfort and Care for Your Sick Dog

Approximately 44 percent of all U.S. households have a dog. There’s no denying that dog ownership can bring you joy but it also brings you responsibility.

Dogs require careful care and attention. That’s especially true when it comes to their health.

Having a sick dog can be frustrating, scary, and uncomfortable all at once. The situation is even worse if you are unprepared. So what should you do if your dog is under the weather?

The first thing you need to do if you have a sick dog is to call your local vet. In the meantime, here are some ways to comfort Fido in his time of need. Read on to learn more.

Common Practices

Do you think your dog is sick? The first thing you need to do is look out for some warning signs that your dog has a health issue.

The best thing you can do to help is to monitor your dog’s daily activity.

Keep a running log of your dog’s bowel movements, eating habits, and fluid intake. Always make sure your dog has a filled water bowl and that they are drinking enough water.

If your dog is vomiting or experiencing diarrhea, you may want to alter their diet. You can withhold food for at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours to help alleviate their symptoms.

You can then change their diet to help their stomachs settle. Introduce them to a protein and starch-rich diet with items like chicken and white rice. Make sure you slowly integrate these foods into their regular diet to avoid further upsetting their stomachs.

Try to limit their exercise and their intake of snacks and treats. You may have to keep a watchful eye to ensure they aren’t scavenging or eating additional items. If vomiting and diarrhea persist, make sure you call your vet.

Aging Dogs

As dog’s age, they will go through natural health changes. Your dog might seem like they have a major illness but it might just be a normal sign of aging.

As your dog ages, it’s on you to provide them with the care they need. Remember that older dogs need less food, exercise, and may have issues relieving themselves.

If your dog has a long-term health issue, try to make them as comfortable as possible.

Your sick dog might require help eating. You can help them by mashing up meat, serving them warmed up food, and even feeding them out of your hand.

You might also have to help them drink water. Make sure their water bowl is easily accessible and filled at all times.

Dogs that have difficulty standing need extra care to relieve themselves. You can put a towel underneath their stomach and hold both sides securely. This creates a sling that will help them get from place to place.

Helping Your Sick Dog

It’s not easy to care for sick dogs. But it’s easier when you provide them with the attentive care they need.

These tips will help your dog have extra comfort in their time of need. Remember to always call your vet if symptoms persist or you fear your dog has a major illness.
